Canvas Access and Setup
Log in to Canvas using your school-issued username and password. Once logged in, you’ll be taken to your Dashboard, where all of your active courses will be listed. Click on any course name to access its content.
Make sure you’re using the correct username and password. If you still can’t log in, try resetting your password through the Canvas login page. If the issue persists, contact your school’s IT department for assistance.
Click on your profile picture or name in the top left corner of the Canvas screen, then go to “Account” and select “Profile.” You can update your contact details and profile picture here.
If you’re unable to access a course or materials, first check with your teacher to ensure you’ve been enrolled in the course. If the issue is technical (e.g., broken links), reach out to your school’s tech support for assistance.
Assignments & Grading
To submit an assignment, click on the “Assignments” tab in your course. Find the specific assignment and click on it. Follow the prompts to upload your work, either as a file or by entering text, then click “Submit” when you’re ready.
Teachers may allow late submissions without a penalty. Always communicate with your teacher if you need extra time.
Go to the “Grades” tab in your course to see a list of all graded assignments and your current score. You can also track your overall grade and see teacher feedback on specific assignments.
Each Monday, teachers will send messages to students who have not yet submitted assignments from the previous week and enter 0’s for those assignments. This reflects what your grade will be if those assignments are not completed. However, you still have the option to complete those assignments for full credit, even if they are marked late.
Live Sessions and Thrive Time
For High School Students, live Thrive Time sessions are held on Tuesday from 4-5 PM or Thursday from 11 AM – 12 PM. For Middle School Students, live Thrive Time sessions are on Tuesday from 5-6 PM or Thursday from 10-11 AM.
If you miss a live Thrive Time, have a parent or guardian complete the Thrive Time Excuse Link for that week. Please note that submitting the form does not automatically guarantee an excused absence. Acceptable excuses include illness, injury, bereavement, or doctor appointments.
Canvas Communication
You can send a message to your teacher through the “Inbox” feature in Canvas. This is where all class-related communication will happen. You can also check for any announcements from your teacher in the “Announcements” section of the course.
To communicate with a teacher you’re not enrolled with, you can use the Inbox feature in Canvas. Simply open the Inbox and click on Compose a new message. In the Course field, select Homeroom, as all teachers are listed within that course. Then, enter the teacher’s name in the To field and write your message. Once you’re ready, click Send, and your message will be delivered to the appropriate teacher.
To view important announcements, go to Account in the left-hand menu and select Global Announcements. Additionally, important announcements may also be found within your courses. Simply click on the Announcements tab within each course. School-wide announcements will be placed in both the Homeroom and Global sections.
Technical Support and Troubleshooting
Yes, you can access Canvas on your mobile device using the Canvas Student app. While you can complete assignments and participate in discussions, most tasks may be easier on a computer, especially those that require file uploads or extensive text editing.
If you’re having issues during a test or quiz, take a screenshot and note the problem. Once you’re back online, contact your teacher immediately with the details. They will be able to provide an extension and/or resolve any technical problems on their end.
Course materials can be found in the “Modules” section of your course. Here, you’ll find organized materials such as lecture notes, videos, reading assignments, and other resources. You can also access them through the “Files” section if your teacher uploads documents there.
Use the “Calendar” feature in Canvas to keep track of deadlines and important dates. Create a personal study schedule and set aside dedicated time each day to work on your assignments. It’s also helpful to break large tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.
If you’re struggling with the material, reach out to your teacher via the “Inbox” feature. You can also check for learning labs offered by your teacher at NHA through the “Inbox” feature. You may additionally reach out to peers for group study sessions.
If you receive a message that says you got a 0/100 and try to open the assignment, but get a message that says, “no preview available”, you are not on the appropriate lesson based on your progress. You have to go to the home page and click on the lesson that is directly after the last lesson you completed. Modules MUST be completed in order.
Staying Engaged in Virtual Learning
Stay organized, participate actively in discussions, and communicate with your teacher if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated. Set personal academic goals, reward yourself for achievements, and take breaks to avoid burnout.
